Tips For Moving Large Furniture Out Of Your Home

by Byron Matthews

Do you have an upcoming move and a lot of large items to get out of your current home? If so, it helps to know these tips for moving them.

Use The Right Equipment

Moving large furniture is always much easier when you have the right equipment for the job. For starters, don't use a standard utility dolly if you are moving large items, since it is going to make the job very difficult. You'll want to have an appliance dolly. The main difference between the two is that an appliance dolly has straps that can wrap around an item and be tightened to ensure that the item doesn't slip off the dolly. Not only is this great for moving things like a heavy refrigerator, but it can be used to move a tall dresser, as well.

Forearm moving straps are another tool you'll want to have on hand for your moving day. They help you lift heavy items by putting the weight on your forearms rather than your fingers, and you won't have to bend down very far to lift the item up, as well.

Use Plastic Wrap and Furniture Pads

Getting items out of your home is going to be a challenge if you are navigating around staircases, tight corners, and door frames. You can protect items by using plastic wrap and furniture pads. Plastic wrap comes in large rolls, and it can be used to wrap around an item to give it an extra layer of protection. It works great when you need to move an item made out of fabric, like a large couch, since it will help protect the fabric from becoming ripped or dirty.

However, you should avoid putting plastic wrap directly onto wood items since that can trap moisture against the wood. Instead, cover it with a furniture pad, which is like a large blanket, and then wrap the item with plastic wrap to secure the pad in place. If your dining room table rubs up against a corner while moving it, you won't have to worry about the table having a long scratch across the surface.

Use Specialty Boxes

Some items don't travel well due to how fragile they are. For example, a big TV is going to have a lot of surface area that can become damaged if it takes a bad bump. Consider buying specialty boxes for these items from a moving company. There are actually boxes designed for moving a TV that will give the screen protection from accidental damage.
