How To Prepare For A Full Service Move

by Byron Matthews

A full-service move is much easier than a self-managed move and is a great option if it's available. However, even this kind of move can still be stressful, and there are some stresses unique to this kind of move. Here are a couple ways you can be more prepared for a full-service move and have a less stressful and less expensive time.

Get Rid of Extra Items

The cost of a full-service move is directly related to how much is being moved, usually in terms of weight. The more unnecessary items that can be disposed of, the better. Since weight is the biggest factor, look for items that aren't appropriate to the new location that can be donated, sold, or disposed of. In the cases of basements, attics, and sheds, they need to be cleaned and organized before the full-service move is booked.

The process of the move will include a representative of the company doing a walkthrough to provide an estimate. While the estimate will be an upper limit and can be adjusted lower, work to get things squared away prior to the walkthrough.

Organize

When the movers come to pack, they will be moving very, very quickly. If something needs to be packed with another item, make sure they are side-by-side and have some kind of notice on them. Don't rely on verbal instructions. Paths should be cleared in cluttered rooms, trash should be thrown away, and delicate items or those that will be traveling with the client should be packed and removed from the house before the movers arrive. There are many full-service movers who will pack a full trash can into a box if it hasn't been emptied beforehand.

Set Aside Special Items

Because the movers have very specific goals on both packing day and moving day, it is critical to take some precautions to make it as easy as possible. The actual people doing the packing or the move are not the same as the person who did the walkthrough, which means that they don't know what is supposed to go and stay in detail.

If items are left sitting around, they will be packed or they will be moved into the truck. This can be a problem when a coat, purse, or another important item is set down for a few minutes and disappears into a box. Keep personal items in a very specific, marked area in the house or keep them outside of the house entirely.
