3 Tips To Make Your New House Feel Like Home

by Byron Matthews

Moving house is a difficult time, and it's important you get settled in as quickly as possible. Although organising the logistics may be straightforward, many people find that it takes a long time to settle in to a new house. To help you with this, consider the three tips below to make your new property feel more like home:

Start with the Smallest

Many people make the mistake of trying to tackle the big rooms, such as the bedroom and lounge area, first. This makes sense – these are the most important rooms in your home, so it's understandable that you want to make them feel homely as soon as possible. However, these rooms are often the largest rooms in your home and renovating them can take a significant period of time and effort! Additionally, it's often very expensive to renovate these areas as you have to make high-value purchases such as beds and sofas.

Starting with the biggest rooms first can leave people exhausted, so a great way to make your house feel like a home quickly is to start small. Have a look at your dining room and bathroom – is there anything you can do to give these rooms a makeover? Whether it's adding some personal pictures to the dining area or making sure everyone's toiletries are organised in the bathroom, minor tweaks in these areas can make you more comfortable in your new home.

Add Sentimental Value

If you've just purchased a new home, chances are you will have decided on an interior color scheme and furniture layout. However, this doesn't mean there isn't a little wiggle room for some creativity. To help you settle in, you should look at adding a couple of small sentimental touches to each of your new rooms.

This means choosing pictures and ornaments for their sentimental value as opposed to their value or artistic merit. If you have your kids' old school pictures, hang them over the fireplace as soon as possible. If you still have some great photos from your honeymoon, get them framed and scatter them throughout the house. These small memories littered throughout your new home will help you settle in as quickly as possible.

Invite Friends and Family Over

One of the main reasons you feel nostalgic about your old home is the memories you made when living there. The quickest way you can settle in in your new home is to start making new memories as quickly as possible! Many people worry that their new home isn't "perfect" yet and they don't have everything the way they want it. This is completely the wrong way to look at it. The quicker you start breaking bread and sharing memories in your new house, the quicker you will be able to settle in.

You don't have to cook up a five-course banquet for your nearest and dearest – pizza on paper plates and wine in plastic cups will suffice! Don't worry too much about the presentation, just invite some of your closest friends and family over and your new house will instantly feel more at home.

It's understandable that moving into a new home can be daunting and you will want to ensure you don't burden yourself during the move. The best way to do this is to hire a professional moving company to carry out the move on your behalf. This way, you can forget about the logistics and worry about what matters most – turning your new house into a home!
